What does it mean to create an artificial natural landscape? How can we compose a variety of individual experiences, and to what extent are we humanizing animals? These are key questions guiding the “Nascosta in Piena Vista” project, developed by Atelier Miller for the Basel Zoo. The project reimagines the zoo as a space of contemplation rather than spectacle.

Beginning with a crossing over a bridge, visitors transition from individual perspectives to a framed view along a central axis that highlights the savanna’s horizontality. This axis is punctuated by “haha walls,” subtle boundaries that maintain visual continuity while separating humans from animals. Buildings within these boundaries serve as thresholds, with an aquarium marking the end of the view. Strategically placed vegetation further blurs the line between city and savanna, creating secluded spaces for deeper interaction. Ultimately, the design challenges traditional zoo experiences, fostering a more respectful and immersive connection between humans and nature.
