PERIMETER BLOCK

Perimeter blocks are a key component of many European cities. They become an urban form in which very high urban densities can be achieve without high-rise buildings becoming a naturally economical and practical urban typology. One important advantage is that buildings benefit from proximity to the walkable streetscape, and at the same time get ample light and adjacent private outdoor space in the quieter and more secluded interiors of the blocks. Giving particular attention to the following questions, I considered perimeter block with multiple courtyards as a building typology.

How can we build in the most sustainable and appropriate manner? How can we address the changing needs of society? How can the process of densification be effectively managed? How can we develop contemporary solutions to housing by employing a specific typology: the perimeter block with courtyards?

Antwerp, embraces a beautifully diverse population. With roots spanning continents, the city is growing with a multitudin of cultures and traditions. This heterogeneity paints a vivid, dynamic portrait of the city. Architecture must reflect the city’s needs; in doing so, I have developed a perimeter block capable of accommodating various types of apartments, always adhering to the dual exposure, both inside and outside the perimeter block. The relationship between the two courtyards and the square provides the opportunity to create diverse connections in between public and private spaces, enhancing the quality of living.
